‘Tis the season for stitching the community together
It’s Thursday night and a half dozen women are seated around a table where the centerpiece is colorful bundles of yarn. Cellphones are cast aside, and a selection of seltzers are within reach as manicured hands work with selected fibers. Some are knitting sweaters, others scarves. Some are novices, others are pros. All have arrived at Matriarch on Thames Street in Newport for a recently launched Knit Club, where camaraderie meets concentration.

Art from the island of Italy
Just a few steps into the Mystic Seaport Museum’s Collins Gallery in the Thompson Exhibition Building sits a beautiful 35-and-a-half foot hand-carved gondola made in the 1970s in Italy. The long, flat-bottomed boat was created with more than 280 pieces of various species of wood: mahogany, cherry, fir, walnut, oak, elm, larch and lime.

Founded by former Connecticut College art professor Peter Leibert in 1974, the Westerly Morris Men dance group, based in Westerly, Rhode Island is one of the oldest continuously active teams in the United States specializing in traditional English Morris dance.
